David Watson 1934-2007
There are several non-cricketers who have played an important part in Avebury Cricket Club's history to date, and David Watson was without doubt one of them.
A Doctor of Fuel Technology and lifetime employee of the Blue Circle Company, David made a huge contribution to Wiltshire and in particular Marlborough life, being Mayor of Marlborough in 2000-2001, and district councilor for the Kennet Valley villages for 12 years.
However, we will remember him most for his great contribution our Club, in particular taking on the role of scorer for so long, and he will be sadly missed. As a scorer David was always reliable, suffering both his own mistakes and those of his fellow scorers with the same good humour and dry wit. His ball-by-ball commentaries were always entertaining, punctuated with his favourite catchphrase "Now, where's THAT gone?" whenever Greg or Henry were in particularly attacking form.
David was also a helpful contributor at our Annual General Meetings, using his vast experience of local government and council issues to make sure that we approached the right people in respective of new proposals and ideas, and generally making sure that we did things properly.
David was diagnosed with lung cancer seven years ago and made a good recovery following surgery, but sadly the disease returned two years ago. However, with typical stubbornness and strength of mind David carried on life as normal, remaining a dedicated father and grandfather and spending a good deal of time indulging his lifetime’s passion for fishing. Despite his illness this summer, it is testament to his strength of mind and character that he managed to attend many of our games this season.
Our thoughts are with his wife and equally loyal Avebury supporter, Gillian, their children Stephanie, Fizzie and Ben, as well as the rest of the family as they adjust to life without David. We wish them well, and mourn the passing of a loyal supporter and friend.
